Become a HEMPI Governor

Use your unique skills and experience to make a strategic contribution to the success of HEMPI empowerment initiatives.

Establishing strong, diverse governance teams

Governors at HEMPI play a crucial role in ensuring that every participant in our initiatives has the opportunity to succeed. By volunteering their time, expertise, and networks, governors provide strategic input and oversight that have a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and communities we serve.

At HEMPI, we are committed to building diverse and inclusive leadership structures where everyone — staff, mentors, and beneficiaries — can thrive and achieve their full potential. We know that reflecting diverse perspectives makes us stronger, more representative, and more effective.

Our governor recruitment process follows the principles set out in HEMPI’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement. Local Empowerment Boards (LEBs) should reflect the communities we serve, bringing together a wide range of skills, experiences, and perspectives to strengthen our mission and amplify community voices.

.

Becoming a governor at HEMPI is about more than attending meetings — it’s about active participation and commitment. Governors are expected to embed themselves within our programmes, engage deeply with communities, and contribute to shaping key decisions that determine the future of HEMPI’s work.

“For me, being a governor means listening to the voices of young people and women in my community, and helping HEMPI create pathways that respond to their real needs.”

Roles and Responsibilities

Local Empowerment Boards (LEBs) provide strategic input into program me plans and priorities, embed HEMPI’s ethos and values, and ensure accountability to the communities we serve. They support local engagement with staff, volunteers, participants, and stakeholders.

Governors do not carry legal liability but act as trusted advisors, advocates, and champions of HEMPI’s mission.

There are four main avenues for involvement:

  • HEMPI-appointed Governor – an individual from the community or beyond, passionate about empowerment and social impact.
  • Parent/Guardian Governor – a parent or guardian of a participant in HEMPI programmes, nominated through community representation.
  • Staff Governor – a serving member of HEMPI’s facilitation or support team.
  • Partner Link Governor – a representative from partner organisations within the wider Hielite Academy network.

Appointment and induction

All governors are appointed by the Head of HEMPI Governance in collaboration with the LEB Chair. Appointees receive structured induction training and ongoing support from HEMPI’s Governance & Leadership Team.

Governors serve a three-year term and are expected to:

  • Attend at least four board meetings per year.
  • Participate in training and capacity-building sessions.
  • Contribute to programme events, reviews, and decision-making panels.

All governors must adhere to the HEMPI Governors’ Code of Conduct, undergo vetting (where applicable), and annually declare any potential conflicts of interest

.

Governors make a real difference by shaping how HEMPI delivers empowerment programmes, ensuring leadership and management meet the needs of participants, families, and the wider community.

“My driving force is to help shape opportunities for young people and women in our community. Being a HEMPI Governor has given me the platform to influence change and support real transformation.
